Artist Statement

Several years ago, I fell in love with pastel painting and have stuck with the medium ever since. The feel of the pastel stick gliding directly on the paper, the way the pigment can be layered with thick or thin strokes, and the colors that catch the light to create a vibrance all are what make pastel habit-forming.

You might describe my pastels as realistic but painterly, as I try not to get bogged down with too much detail. My aim is to elicit from the viewer a similar reaction to the subject that drew my attention in the first place. At first, I honed my skills by attending weekly classes at Mainstreet Art Center in Lake Zurich, Illinois. Now, since joining the Chicago Pastel Painters society five years ago, I am inspired by so many excellent artists and by the CPP field excursions, world-class workshops and exhibitions.

I’m fortunate to keep a studio at the beautiful, historic Dole Mansion in Crystal Lake, Illinois. Thank you for your interest in my art!

The artist’s use of pastel is simply lovely, as are the identities she captures in her figures. The work reminds me of Impressionist café scenes while still feeling completely contemporary.” – Gregg Hertzlieb, Judge
